Research Questions

This project aims at assessing the trade-offs between therapeutic and adverse effects, and between net health gain (if this is the case) and net costs associated with co-administration of PPIs in patients receiving long- term low-dose aspirin compared to no co-administration of PPIs. Specific research questions are:

1. What are the effects of co-administration of PPIs in patients (without history of peptic ulcers) prescribed long-term low-dose aspirin on:

  a. absolute and relative risks of adverse GI and CV events, including peptic ulcers, UGIB, myocardial infarction, ischemic stroke, and mortality,

  b. adherence to aspirin, and

  c. absolute and relative risks of hip and vertebral fractures, community-acquired pneumonia, enteric
infection, vitamin B12 and iron deficiency, fundic gland polyps, and gastric cancer?

2. Is co-administration of PPIs cost-effective compared to no co-administration of PPIs in patients taking long-term low-dose aspirin?
